WHOLE COWS MILK
As a mother we always want wants best for our babies. Things have change in the past years in what doctors and parents know before and now. Ralph is the youngest of 3 boys, and MIL raised them basically by herself. I have read Angelo’s baby book when he was a infant and he was already eating a lot of food when he was only 2 months old, this was advice by pediatrician. So, MIL has been telling me to give Kaitlyn whole milk since she gave her boys that when they were younger and they turned out good. I am not oppose to giving her cows milk but suprisingly it was Ralph that really objected to it. He pointed out that the baby gets more nutrition and vitamins out of the formula than the regular whole milk since he read it in the book. Of course, his mother would react and try to explain to him that he had cows milk before he was a year old and he turned out fine. We solved the problem by asking the pediatrician itself when the right age to start Kaitlyn on whole cows milk.
The pediatrician pointed out several factors that The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that infants not drink whole cow’s milk before the age of one.
WHOLE COW’S MILK
- Low in iron, possibly leading to intestinal blood loss that can result in iron-deficiency anemia
- Low in vitamins C and E, essential for proper development
- Too high in protein and certain minerals
- Whole cow’s milk contains excess amounts of sodium and other nutrients that can put a strain on young kidneys
She also explained that babies generally don’t get nutrients and vitamins from baby foods since the actual use for it is to get baby use to the thought of eating, chewing and expanding his/her taste buds. I was advice to give baby as much formula as i can and avoid giving her whole milk until she is a year old.
Kaitlyn is already a year old and she will be getting her 1 year old check-up, shots and blood work done to test for lead. It will be interesting to find out whether she will be getting off the formula entirely or will she still be on formula. I have a lot of things to talk to the doctor about her coming appointment. We have started giving her cows milk but only a cup here and there, boy does she love whole milk!!!! She could do an advert for ” GOT MILK” . We just got done with her birthday celebration about 2 hrs ago and I’m pooped! Sayonara for now!
